ABOUT US

Olé & Obrigado represents a collection of fine wines crafted by family-owned wineries in Spain and Portugal. A collaboration among business partners Patrick Mata, Alberto Orte and Rui Abecassis, Olé & Obrigado is a highly specialized wine import company offering the most comprehensive and well-curated collection of wines from the Iberian Peninsula available in the U.S.

At Olé & Obrigado, our mission is to import soulful wines of exceptional quality from Spain and Portugal. We represent over 40 boutique producers across the Iberian Peninsula. Our wines are sold through our distributor partners in all 50 states. We also self-distribute our wines in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania through our distribution company, Olé & Obrigado Direct. You can find our wines at fine wine shops, preferred retailers and restaurants across the U.S.

We also support many charitable initiatives. One of the best examples of this philanthropic ethos is our Spanish rosé, Liquid Geography, from which 100% of profits are donated to charitable causes.

OUR STORY

Native Spaniards Patrick Mata and Alberto Orte founded Olé Imports in 1999 while in college. Both Patrick and Alberto come from families who have been making wine in Spain since the 1800s. The first wines Olé imported to the U.S. were from Alberto’s family in Montilla. Patrick, A Wine Enthusiast Tastemaker, Food & Wine Magazine Tastemaker and Wine Advocate Personality of the Year, was described by Robert Parker as “one of the most driven, passionate and talented young men in the wine world”. Enologist, Alberto Orte, makes extraordinary wines in Spain, including iconic wines such as Atlántida, Elo and Escalada do Sil. He also oversees the production of many other wines imported by Olé & Obrigado from Spain. Alberto is intent on rescuing nearly extinct grape varieties such as Tintilla and Vijiriega in the DO region of Cádiz in southwestern Andalucía, and elaborating wines of place.

Rui Abecassis co-founded New York-based import company Obrigado Vinhos in 2010 in pursuit of building a collection of quality wines honoring the places, grapes and winegrowers of Portugal. A devoted ambassador of Portuguese wine and culture, Rui spent 12 years living abroad before moving back to his native country of Portugal.

In 2013, Rui joined forces with Patrick and Alberto. Combining their passion, experience and expertise, the Iberian team is committed to importing exceptionally delicious, soulful wines that deliver a sense of place with precision. Olé & Obrigado was officially formed in 2018.
