MJC Colares Tinto<< Previous wine Next wine >>
WHAT MAKES THIS WINE UNIQUE?Well-aged, classic Ramisco blend from the westernmost appellation in Europe. MJC Colares Ramisco Tinto is an expression of the extreme Atlantic climate and maritime terroir of this nearly forgotten appellation, from one of the few remaining properties in the area. Showcases the extreme ageability of these wines.
RATING HISTORY:1997 91 W&S Magazine "Year's Best Portugal Red"
GRAPE:100% Ramisco. Average vine age of 20 years, ungrafted rootstock. Planted to sandy and clay soils at an average of 120m (393 ft) elevation
PAIRING SUGGESTIONS:Pair with roast meats such as beef or game, braises and strong cheese.
VINIFICATION AND AGING:Rigorous triage. Fermented in stainless steel, with 2 weeks maceration. Racked to neutral foudre. Because of the complicated history of the estate, the data on its aging is incomplete.
LOCATION, SOIL, CLIMATE:Vineyards located between the Serra de Sintra and the Atlantic, in the westernmost growing area in continental Europe about an hour from Lisbon. Rainfall averages 800mm through the growing season. Soil is a top layer of sand over a layer of clay – vines are dug to 8m deep in order to get proper root purchase in the clay, and gradually backfilled with sand as the vine grows. Climate is Atlantic, with an average temperature of 59 degrees Fahrenheit (15 C) during the growing season.
TASTING NOTES:Rusty garnet with orange rim. Aromas of leather, fresh and dried cherry and cranberry, dried tobacco and flowers. Bright, clear acidity on the palate informs flavors of dried red cherry, rose petal, black pepper and game. Well-structured, with plenty of acidity and tannin to portend a long life in front of it.
