Pablo del Villar

Bodega Hermanos del Villar

Rueda, Spain

A native son of Rueda, deeply connected to its land, Pablo del Villar is more than a winemaker—he is a steward of the land, a farmer at heart, and a visionary in the cellar. As the leader of Bodega Hermanos del Villar, he has redefined the expression of Verdejo, crafting wines that embody the essence of the region with purity, precision, and depth.

IN THE VINEYARD

Tending to 150 hectares of vineyards across the region, Pablo follows a philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing the character of each vineyard to speak for itself. His commitment to terroir expression is evident in his wines, where he segments winemaking by soil profile, ensuring that the wines clearly reflect Rueda’s calcareous textures.

IN THE CELLAR

He was among the first in Rueda to embrace indigenous yeasts, pioneering bâtonnage in stainless steel and extended lees aging to naturally enhance texture and complexity. The result is a clean, polished style of Verdejo that balances minerality, tension, and elegance.

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is at the core of his work—his winery is proudly carbon neutral, a reflection of his deep respect for the land. He also became the first winemaker in Rueda to bottle a single-vineyard wine, Finca Los Hornos, a testament to his belief in the individuality of each parcel.

OTHER FACTS

Beyond his own winery, Pablo’s influence on Rueda is undeniable. As former president of the DO Rueda Regulatory Council, he played a pivotal role in elevating the region’s global standing, advocating for winemaking innovation, and strengthening its commercial reach. His work in refining aging techniques—notably the use of lees to enhance Verdejo’s texture—has positioned Rueda’s wines among Spain’s finest. Though his tenure has ended, his impact endures—both in the glass and across the vineyards of Rueda, where his legacy continues to take root, one harvest at a time.
