A Touriga Vai Nua 2019

It's not as seriously structured, but it is fragrant, tasty, pure and delicious. It has enough structure to seem serious, and it is very fresh, the fruit lifted on the palate. The mid-palate is well on the elegant side—nothing jammy here. It's a bit lean and rather nervy. It finishes with some blueberries but always in a dry fashion, never very fruity. This might be a great summer red, and you can drink it a few degrees cooler than normal.

A Laranja Mecânica 2020

The name of the wine means clockwork orange, the producer's interpretation of an orange wine, rather than a movie. With a golden color and a texture that derives from long maceration of the grape skins, the wine is about structure as well as perfumed white and yellow fruits. Drink from later this year.

Bright and a little mouth puckering, this is another nice performance—and for a bit less money. It is just beautiful, and it holds its own pretty well with the regular Arinto, which seems fairly similar in style. Elegant, fresh and lively, it dances across the tongue with a light touch in terms of weight, but it enlivens the palate with its acidity.

Tinto de Castelão 2020

A wonderfully fresh version of this grape, this is silky and lively. It adds what you would expect from this grape: flavor and aromatics. The raspberries and strawberries lace the finish. There is only average depth and some structure, but this is about hedonism and fruit. It develops beautifully in the glass and evolves steadily.

Baga Ao Sol 2019

The grape's typical tannic structure is on full display here. Supported by dark-black fruits and by a still-youthful chewy texture, the wine is set for aging. Drink from 2025 when it will have smoothed out well.

Goliardo Tintos de Mar 2020

The 2020 Goliardo Tinto shows a touch of rusticity. It's a blend of Caíño with some Espadeiro, Loureiro and a little Sousón. It's medium-bodied and has moderate ripeness and alcohol (12%) with lots of acidity, good freshness and fine tannins.

Medium yellow to the eye, this wine has a nose of green apple, grapefruit and nutmeg. It is fresh in the mouth, with flavors of passion fruit, papaya and lemon. There is a nice note of jasmine on the finish.

This wine makes its case on freshness and acidity, perhaps even more so than normal. It is an impressive performance. The structure suggests it can age and improve, and it really must to justify my enthusiasm. It won't be the perfect choice for those who like sweet and fruity, but it is firing on all cylinders otherwise. Those who like freshness will love it. It will be a particularly good choice in warm weather.

The 2020 Goliardo Espadeiro shows a lot of finesse and elegance. They started picking the grapes at different times, and the wine has gained in precision. The vines ripen at different times, and they are marked and harvested separately.

Goliardo Caiño 2020

The very pale and delicate 2020 Goliardo Caíño is floral, balsamic and peppery, delicate and fresh, varietal with moderate ripeness and notable acidity with a lively stream of freshness. 2,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in January 2023.

Tinta Carvalha Chão dos Eremitas 2020

Indeed, right now it seems to be quite a success, a star in its own right and style. Both may improve in time, but this will hold up its end of the bargain. I'd still like to see it answer some questions in the cellar, but it is irresistible now.

Finca Genoveva Tinto 2020

The 2020 Finca Genoveva Caíño is very different from the rest of the Caíño reds; in this case, it's closer to a Cabernet Franc, with explosive peppery aromas and a balsamic twist (even bay leaf, moss...), very complex and ever-changing in the glass. This is elegant, perfumed, aromatic and precise. This has to be the finest Genoveva Caíño to date. Bravo!

Goliardo A Telleira Albariño 2022

Medium straw in the glass, this wine has a bouquet of guava, Anjou pear and river rocks. A pleasant stony note transfers to the palate alongside a medium texture, lively acidity, and peach, Seckel pear and sage-leaf flavors.

The 2022 Goliardo A Telleira shows lots of finesse. They changed the élevage here to 1,500-litre foudre, which they think works better for Albariño than barrels, no matter how big they are, and this wine clearly shows it. It has the finesse of the sandy soils and a polished texture (a little more sleek, a bit à la Chenin) but still lively and with pungent flavors.

Silky, flavorful and precise, this is a beauty that is still a bit undeveloped, but its lifted fruit and sunny demeanor make it a winner. I really like how this brand has developed. For those looking for a combination of finesse, understatement and flavor, this is a good place to look. It has the structure to let it age and hopefully develop a bit too.

Os Paulistas Chão dos Eremitas 2019

This has the combination of power, complexity, texture and depth. It holds its own or wins on all fronts. It should age well and develop consistently. There are touches of plums, strawberries and herbs and a hint of something like Alicante (yet there isn't any). The mid-palate finesse is exquisite, with silky texture in addition on the finish. The blend creates something different and wonderful

The palate is full-bodied, round, intense and concentrated, ending clearly off-dry, with some noticeable sweetness, which often balances the extreme aggressive character of the very old and concentrated dry wines.

Osborne Oloroso Solera India (1922) RARE 1922

. The nose shows good balance between bitter and sweet notes, nuts, spices (curry perhaps?), noble woods, molasses and a touch of candied fruits and brandy. The palate has hints of a very old wine, complex and concentrated, with a touch of volatility that lifts it up, quite common in such old wines, with good balance between acidity and sweetness.

Vinha dos Utras Branco 2020

This is the richest wine I've seen from the Azores, even with that 12.1%. It's almost unctuous in texture. It's beautifully wrought, with the only remaining question being how it will develop. It should hold some 15 years, maybe more. It will be fascinating to see what happens to this multifaceted and surprisingly lush Arinto dos Açores. The price point, to be sure, is another matter.
